The JU men’s soccer team starts working towards another Atlantic Sun championship on Wednesday when the Dolphins begin the 2010 season at in-state rival UCF at 7:30 p.m.

The Dolphins wrap the week on Friday when they play another former A-Sun foe, Florida Atlantic, at the Ashley Sports Complex with kickoff starting at 7 p.m.

“It’s finally time to get started,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We are ready to use what we learned in the preseason and in preparation this week to get off to a good start. These two squads will help us get tested right out of the gate.”

JU begins the season following a tie against No. 13 USF and a loss to Flagler in preseason play. The Dolphins added 14 new players for the 2010 season to help them erase a 5-11-1 record from last season and return to the A-Sun tournament.

Like the Dolphins, the Knights are looking to bounce back from a dismal 2009 season after posting a 6-7-3 record. UCF tied College of Charleston, 1-1, in preseason play before getting shutout wins against Tampa and Saint Leo.

In 2009, JU and UCF were forced to end in a scoreless tie as persistent thunderstorms at the Ashley Sports Complex made the playing surface unfit to continue.

Florida Atlantic begins the 2010 season on Friday following a 4-10-2 record last year.

Rain also played in key factor in the matchup between the Owls and Dolphins in 2009. The Dolphins raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, but thunderstorms washed out the second half and the chance at a victory.
