Volleyball ends weekend with 3-1 win over Lehigh
The trip back to the First Coast will go a lot better now after junior outside hitter Kathryn Kane and freshman setter Kendall Courtney each tallied double-doubles to lead the JU volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23) win over Lehigh, Saturday morning in the Sacred Heart University Tournament at the Pitt Center.

JU (2-5) played in back-to-back matches for the second straight day but finished on a high note with a .269 hitting percentage, 70 digs and 11 blocks.

LU (3-3) tried to take advantage of 14 service errors by the Dolphins but could only manage a .148 hitting percentage for the match.

“I’m happy to get the win and leave on a good note,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. “There are a lot of things that we still need to work on but at least we have some positives to focus on in practice this week.”

Along with Kane (12 kills, 19 digs) and Courtney (40 assists, 13 digs), senior outside hitter Brittany Lehman added 12 kills while senior outside hitter Aidan Yeager added 11 kills, a .440 (11-0-25) hitting percentage and seven blocks. Senior defensive specialist Hannah Munneke also added 16 digs.

Angelika Kopacz led the Mountain Hawks with 12 kills while Taylor Poole and Courtney McCutchan (16 digs) each added eight kills. Rachel Charles led the defense with a match-high 20 digs.

In the first set, both teams went through two ties until the Mountain Hawks used a 3-0 run to take a 9-6 advantage on an attack error by the Dolphins. JU would bounce back with a 6-1 run, capped by an ace by freshman middle blocker Alyssa Robertson, but LU would battle back to tie the score two more times (the last coming a 14-14). The Dolphins would take control from there by ending the set with an 11-2 run and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second frame, the Dolphins jumped out to a 7-1 lead on an attack error by Taylor Poole. The Mountain Hawks would pull to within three points on nine occasions until pulling to within 24-22 on an attack error by JU but a service error by McCutchan gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead into the break.

In the third set, both teams would battle through 14 ties through the set (the last coming at 19-19) but the Mountain Hawks used a 3-1 run to take a 22-20 advantage on a kill by Poole. Both teams would trade points until a kill by Amanda Clark cut the deficit to 2-1.

In the final frame, JU took a 5-1 lead on an attack error by Hannah Bennett but the Mountain Hawks would event the score, 10-10, on an attack error by JU. After one more tie (11-11), the Dolphins used a 7-3 run to take an 18-14 lead on an attack error by Clark. After trading points, JU used a 4-0 run, capped by a kill by Kane, to take a 23-16 advantage. LU would cut the deficit to 24-23 with a kill by Kopacz but a kill by Lehman would end the match.

The Dolphins will next compete in the Courtyard/Marriott/UCF Classic beginning on Friday against Baylor at 11 a.m.
