Coastal Carolina wins inaugural Labor Day Shootout
The PLAYERS Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass flexed its muscles on Monday, with Coastal Carolina surviving the 27-hole marathon to take home the inaugural Labor Day Shootout title.

Coastal’s Courtney Boe won the individual title at three-over par, carding an even-par final nine holes to rally for the title by two shots over Chattanooga’s Maria Juliana Loza. Coastal Carolina finished at 32-over par, beating #19 Florida by five shots.

JU, who served as the tournament host, finished at 85-over par, taking home fifth place in the six team event. Kristen Boettcher had the low day for the Dolphins, finishing at six-over par and alone in third place.

“The course played extremely tough today and everyone had a battle on their hands out there,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “We didn’t play as well as we would have liked, but now we’ve got some golf under our belt and we know where we’ve got to get better. The one thing we have to remind ourselves is that is by far the toughest golf course we’ll face this season.”

The event was scheduled for 36 holes, but was shortened to 27 due to darkness.

Boettcher opened the tournament with a two-over par 74 to sit in third place entering the final nine, where she saw Boe rally to take home the title.

The course’s difficulty can best be measured in the fact that only three players broke par for nine holes – and all of those came on the front nine.

Morgan Jackson claimed a tie for 20th at 19-over par, posting an 86 in the first round and a five -over par 41 on the final nine. Jessica Williams equaled Jackson’s 86 in the morning round and shot an eight-over par 44 on the last nine to finish 25th at 22-over par.

Francesca Yong finished in 29th at 26-over par, shooting a 15-over par 87 in the opening round. Carlie Gehlhausen, playing in her first collegiate event as a freshman, shot a 96 in the first round but bounced back with a six-over par 42 to finish in 33rd at 30-over par. Melissa Magdor carded a 93 en route to a tie for 34th at 31-over par.

Meghan Hughes rounded out the JU lineup by tying for 37th at 39-over par.

The Dolphins are off until Sept. 27 when the participate in the Sea Trail Intercollegiate.
