Women’s cross country moves to sixth in USTFCCCA South Region poll
The second place finish at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational has pushed the JU women’s cross country team to a program-best sixth in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association south region poll on Monday.
The Dolphins jumped from ninth in last week’s poll to finish ahead of in-state foe USF (7th) as well as A-Sun rivals UNF (8th) and Lipscomb (9th). The ranking also beats the school-best No. 8 ranking they got on Aug. 30 and last season.
“We had a nice race this Saturday, but it is really too early in the season to know how good any team will be eight weeks from now,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “It is nice to be recognized for our results but we have to continue to improve if we hope to be in this position when it matters at the end of the season.”
On Sept. 18, sophomore Joane Pierre broke a 17-yeard school record by running a 17:33.5 to win the UF Mountain Dew Invitational and help the Dolphins take a program-best second place finish.
Senior Susanne Klungtveit was the Dolphins’ next highest finisher after placing 13th with a time of 18:20.85. Freshman Svenja Meyer recorded a time of 18:36.46 to finished 21st, while senior Anastasia Fokina ran a time of 18:58.38 (32nd).
Junior Baliee Hedstrom (19:07.24), sophomore Morgan Keel (19:41.05) and sophomore Amalia Vogler (19:51.72) rounded out the rest of the Dolphin runners on the day.
The Dolphins will train again for the next two weeks before running again on Oct. 1 at the FLRunners.com Invitational in Titusville, Fla.
