Men’s soccer falls in overtime to #9 SMU, 2-1
The JU men’s soccer team fought hard against No. 9 SMU, but the Mustangs rallied with two late goals to down the Dolphins, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala.
Trailing 1-0 for most of the match, the Mustangs (9-0) tied it with a goal from Robbie Derschang in the 69th minute before getting the game-winning goal less than three minutes into overtime from Arthur Ivo. Craig Hill posted two saves in 93 minutes between the posts to help the cause.
Senior forward Nedim Hrustic scored in the first half in the third straight match for the Dolphins (5-3-1), who were outshot, 12-5, in the contest. Senior goalie Johnny Foley (4-3-1) finished with three saves for JU.
“We just didn’t have enough to put them away,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We were able to get the first strike, but were unable to get anything else going. They are a good team who fought their way back. I’m pleased with how we played this weekend because we have built some momentum heading into A-Sun play.”
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of the match as Hrustic knocked in a header on a cross from junior midfielder Darko Karamatic. JU kept SMU off the board by blocking one shot, while Foley saved another attempt to end the half.
In the second half, the Mustangs broke through in the 69th minute after Josue Soto sent a ball through to Derschang who made a cut at the top of the box and finished to tie the contest.
Karamatic had a chance to score less than five minutes later, but Hill saved it to set up the overtime period.
Less than two minutes into overtime, Ivo received a pass from Leone Cruz and bounced a shot off a JU player into the net for the game-winning score.
The Dolphins open the A-Sun schedule at cross-town rival UNF on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. The matchup at Hodges Stadium will kick off the annual SunTrust River City Rumble against the two schools. The two teams will also battle for the Dennis Viollet Memorial Cup, which the Ospreys took home last season after their 2-1 victory at the Ashley Sports Complex.
