Laster, Dewhirst earn PFL Player of the Week honors
J.J. Laster and Jordan Dewhirst made big plays on Saturday and were rewarded by being named Pioneer Football League Offensive and Defensive “Player of the Week” on Monday.

Laster continues JU’s run on Offensive Player of the Week awards as a Dolphin has received the award in each of the last five weeks, with four different players receiving recognition.

Dewhirst is the first Dolphin to earn the top defensive honor this season after his record-setting 100-yard interception return for a touchdown.

“These two young men made some big plays for us on Saturday,” said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. “You have to give our offensive line a lot of credit in opening up holes for us to rush for more than 400 yards.

“Jordan made a special play on the interception, which really recognizes the entire defense’s effort. They made it really tough for Marist to move the ball and forced a couple of turnovers.”

Laster rushed for a career-high 177 yards on just 11 carries with two touchdowns, averaging 16.1 yards per carry. He got off to a hot start, scoring from 71 yards out on his first carry. He added a 3-yard score in the third quarter as well.

The junior has racked up 624 rushing yards this season and has scored seven touchdowns. He ranks second in the PFL in rushing average, picking up 78 yards per game, trailing only teammate Rudell Small.

His effort was apart of a record-setting day for JU. The Dolphins totaled 433 rushing yards, shattering the previous school record 398. Jacksonville finished the day with 577 yards of total offense, the fourth time in the last five weeks that JU has posted at least 500 yards.

Dewhirst anchored a JU defensive effort that stymied the Red Foxes all day. He broke up one pass and ended any hopes of Marist comeback with his interception at the goal line and raced up the field untouched for the longest interception return in program history.

For the game, JU held Marist to just 40 yards rushing and only 242 yards of total offense with just 11 first downs.

Jacksonville will put its six-game winning streak on the line this Saturday when they travel to face Morehead State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
