Men’s soccer falls at FGCU, 4-0
Florida Gulf Coast showed why they are the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season champions by scoring three times in the second half to shut out the JU men’s soccer team, 4-0, on Friday night in Fort Meyers, Fla.

Josey Portillo scored a goal and had an assist to lead the Eagles (12-3-2, 8-0 A-Sun), while Ryan Price, Westin Vallentine and Deion Jones rounded out the scoring.

Junior midfielder Predrag Ivanovic recorded two of the Dolphins’ (8-8-1, 3-5) 10 shots on the night.

“We didn’t have our A game tonight,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “They played liked the regular season champions, while we just couldn’t get a spark. Our focus now is on Stetson and trying to get one last win on Sunday.”

Portilo put the Eagles up early in the 13th minute by beating sophomore goalie Zach Greenwald with a shot in the lower right corner.

The Eagles doubled their lead in the second half after Price headed the ball in the net on a pass from Juan Castellon less than eight minutes into the frame.

JU had three of its six attempts in the second half within two minutes period starting in the 70th minute, but two missed their mark and the other was saved by FGCU goalie Adam Glick.

Vallentine scored on a rebounded shot from Portillo in the 81st minute for the 3-0 advantage, while Jones added a goal in the 87th minute on a free kick to ensure the win.

The Dolphins will have one last attempt to get into the A-Sun Tournament when they play at Stetson on Sunday at 4 p.m.
