Volleyball blanks Bethune-Cookman, 3-0
Sophomore outside hitter Alliya Drzewiecki tallied a match-high 11 kills and the Dolphins snapped a three match-losing streak as the JU volleyball swept Bethune-Cookman, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-23), Tuesday evening at Swisher Gymnasium.

JU (13-14) hit a match-high .225 in the contest while also adding a match-best seven service aces and six blocks.

B-CU (7-22) increased its hitting percentage with each set but finished with a match-low .118 overall.

“It’s good to get a win under our belts,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. “We have a big match on Friday and our postseason will come down to how we play. We have a lot of ability on this team and now its time to show it.”

Along with Drzewiecki, freshman middle blocker Alyssa Robertson added eight kills. Junior libero Ashley August led the defense with a match-high 16 blocks while sophomore middle blocker Alison Loeppky chipped in with a match-high four blocks and senior defensive specialist Hannah Munneke added a match-high four aces.

Jessica Wilson led the Lady Cats with nine kills while Jacqueline Woodyear (14 digs) and Kat Agson (three blocks) led the defense.

In the first set, B-CU jumped out to an early 4-1 lead but the Dolphins evened the score (6-6) after an attack error by Krysta Gardner. Both teams went through two more ties until JU used a 6-2 run, capped by a kill by Drzewiecki, to take a 15-11 advantage. Both teams would trade points until the Dolphins ended the frame on a 6-0 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, JU jumped out to a 9-4 lead on a block by freshman setter Kendall Courtney and Loeppky and then increased the margin to 12-6 with an ace by August. Both teams would trade points the rest of the way until a kill by freshman outside hitter Niatha Cullen gave JU a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

In the third frame, both teams battled through eight ties until JU used a 6-2 run to take a 23-19 advantage on an ace by August. The Wildcats would cut the margin to 24-23 on a kill by Wilson but the Dolphins would get a kill by Drzewiecki to seal the match.
