Women’s basketball opens season at USF on Friday
A new season is upon the Dolphins as the JU women’s basketball team opens the 2010-11 campaign against USF on Friday at 5 p.m. in Tampa, Fla.
The Dolphins (0-0) head into the matchup after downing Tampa, 70-41, in their lone exhibition matchup on Nov. 5. They are also looking for their first season-opening win since knocking off Georgia Southern to start the 2007-08 season, 72-58.
“We are looking forward to getting the season going,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “I was pleased with how we played against Tampa and we have had a good week of practice. USF is always tough, but I’m confident we can get off to a good start and play well.”
In the win against Tampa, the Dolphins had all three of their seniors hit double-figures to secure the win.
Senior guard GiGI Thomas recorded 17 points and four steals to pace the Dolphins offense. Senior forward Taneskei Richardson added 12 points and nine rebounds, while senior forward Lynsey Paschal rounded out the group with 10 points and four boards.
The Dolphins beat the Spartans in every category, including 30 points off of 27 Tampa turnovers and 17 JU steals. They also had a 19-2 advantage in fast break points.
The Bulls (0-0) open the year returning seven players, including two starters, from last season’s squad that fell to Florida in the first round of the WNIT. USF was picked to finish 11th in the annual BIG East Coaches Poll.
JU and USF are meeting for the seventh time with the Bulls taking all six of the previous matchups. The Bulls downed the Dolphins, 76-64, in Tampa last season. JU is 0-3 all-time against teams from the Big East.
