Women’s basketball plays Long Island in final non-conference action on Thursday
The JU women’s basketball team hopes to break its recent skid as they host Long Island for its final non-conference game on Thursday in the Veterans Memorial Arena at 5 p.m.
After racing out to a school best 5-1 start, the Dolphins (6-4) have dropped three of their last four contests with the last loss coming against UCF, 92-59, on Dec. 20.
"We are looking to get back on the winning track,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “We have been talking a lot about being a more competitive, disciplined and consistent team. We want to finish the non-conference schedule on a winning note."
Against the Knights, JU finished shooting 38.6 percent from the floor and went 50 percent (10-20) at the charity stripe. Junior guard Crystal Bell scored a season-best 22 points off the bench, while senior forward Taneskei Richardson finished with 15 points.
Richardson currently ranks second on the team in scoring (10.6), while leading the team in rebounds with 9.3 per contest. Senior Lynsey Paschal leads the Dolphins in scoring with a 10.9 average.
The Blackbirds (6-4) head into the First Coast on a two-game winning streak after defeating Delaware State (12/11) and Stony Brook (12/19) in its last action on the court.
Kiara Evans paces the team with 13.3 points per game, while Ashley Palmer is second in scoring (12.0) and first in rebounds (9.2).
These teams have met once before on Dec. 30, 2002 with Long Island earning a 68-53 victory in Swisher Gymnasium. JU had 17 points from Kara Donnell, while Kat Sungy added 14 points.
