JU selected eighth in A-Sun women’s tennis preseason poll
A new season of optimism is buzzing around JU women’s tennis as the Dolphins officially begin the 2011 campaign under the direction of new head coach Justin Miles after being selected eighth in the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
“We are very excited to start our 2011 spring dual match season,” said Miles. “We have a lot of new faces and we are ready to get some matches under our belts before we start conference play on March 5th against ETSU.”
In the preseason coaches’ poll ETSU took the number one nod followed by UNF, Stetson, FGCU, Campbell, USC Upstate, Kennesaw State, Jacksonville, Mercer, Belmont and Lipscomb. UNF took the preseason player of the year honors with junior Aline Berkenbrock while Stetson claimed doubles honors with sophomore Carolina de los Santos and senior Unnati Purushotham.
The Dolphins are looking to improve upon last season’s overall record of 10-11 with a 2-8 finish in conference. The Dolphins will return first team all-A-Sun selection Eve Castaing along with junior players Virginia Iwinski and Veronique Spencer. Last season, Castaing lost her season-opening match to North Texas but did not drop a single match for the rest of the season. The French native also lost just two sets during the entire season.
The Dolphins will feature the addition of three new freshmen players Natalia Marques Melibeu (Recife, Brazil), Gabriela Scaff Haddad Bartos (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and Flavia Nagayama (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
JU starts the 2011 campaign at Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 28th before hosting its home opener on Jan. 29 against Florida A&M at 9:00am. All home competitions are played at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Center on the JU campus and are free to all fans.
