Track & field opens indoor season at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational on Saturday
The JU track & field team will get its first taste of competition in 2011 when it opens the indoor season at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational starting on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla.

Sophomore Charlene Charles, along with juniors Alana Walker and Stacey Young will complete in Saturday’s pentathlon. The rest of the squad will compete in individual events on Sunday.

“We are excited to finally be getting our competitive season started,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “We have had a solid preparation period and I look forward to seeing how that translates into competitive performances. We have a veteran group with a lot of senior leadership. We have high expectations for our first meet and for the season.”

Along with Saturday’s meet, the Dolphins, who return 17 athletes from the 2010 squad, will also participate in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup in State College, Pa. next weekend before competing for their sixth consecutive conference title at the A-Sun Championship on Feb. 18 in Johnson, City, Tenn.

Charles is one of the group standouts last year after earning “Most Valuable Performer”, “Most Outstanding Track Performer” and “Most Outstanding Freshman Performer honors at both conference meets. She also had the highest pentathlon score of any freshman in the NCAA indoors (3,861 points) and was one of two freshmen to qualify for the outdoor NCAA championships in the heptathlon.
