Hot shooting leads JU past Lipscomb, 78-68
With its best shooting effort of the season, the JU men’s basketball team raced past Lipscomb for a 78-68 win in historic Swisher Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
JU (15-7, 9-4 A-Sun) tied its season high with eight 3-pointers, with seven of those coming in the first half. The Dolphins also hit 26-of-30 at the free throw line, including 17 in a row at one point.
Ayron Hardy and Delwan Graham each had 14 points for JU, leading five Dolphins in double figures. Travis Cohn and Russell Powell each had 13 while Tevin Galvin added 10 off the bench.
“We made some shots early and that got our confidence up,” said JU head coach Cliff Warren. “Our guys have a lot of confidence shooting in Swisher and that showed tonight. We got some open shots and hit them.”
Despite taking a season-low 44 field goal attempts, JU hit 50 percent of its shots (22-of-44). It’s the fourth time this year JU has hit at least 50 percent of its shots in a game and the first since hitting 50.9 percent against Campbell on Jan. 3.
The long-range attack featured Cohn and Powell hitting three each, with the total being a new career high for Powell.
JU led from the opening tip, eventually taking a 17-point lead in the first half before going into intermission with a 41-27 lead.
Lipscomb (14-10, 9-6 A-Sun) made a run in the second half, using a 14-2 spurt to cut the deficit to five, 50-45, with 12:10 left in the game.
The Bisons eventually cut the lead to two, 55-53, on a Josh Slater free throw with 6:39 left in the game – but JU answered with six straight points to put the game out of reach.
Lipscomb had three players in double figures, led by Josh Slater’s 20 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals. Adnan Hodzic had 19 points and two rebounds while Brandon Brown added 10 points.
The Dolphins wrap up their four-game homestand on Tuesday at the Arena against UNF. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
