Track & field signs Sally Marie Futch for the 2012 season
The JU track & field team has added more strength and depth to its throwers group by signing Sally Marie Futch for the 2012 season.

Futch, a senior at Bulloch Academy at Statesboro, Ga., is currently ranked 10th nationally in the hammer toss and 15th in the weight throw. She has earned all-region and all-state honors during her first three seasons as well as three state titles in the discus and one in the shot put. Futch currently boasts a personal best of 132’8” in the discus, 155’2” in the hammer and a 48’4.5” in the weight throw.

In July, Futch placed third in the discus in AAU National Championships/ESPN Rise Games in Orlando, Fla. before taking fourth at the Region III Junior Olympics Greensboro, N.C. She also took second in the hammer at the Junior Olympics.

“Sally Marie is a great addition to the throws program, not only athletically, but academically as well,” said JU assistant track & field coach Bambi Carson. “She has done a lot of training on her own so I am excited to see what she will be able to do when she has teammates to train and compete with everyday. She will make a huge impact as a freshman in our conference.”

Off the track, Futch is also strong in the classroom as well after earning three President’s Education Awards and Scholar Athlete honors twice. She is a part of the National Honor Society, National Beta Club Yearly Honor Roll and a Girls’ State Representative. Futch also earned the Wofford Junior Merit Scholarship and is a National Youth Leaders Conference Nominee.

The current Dolphins will return to action on Feb. 18 when they defend their conference title at the A-Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson, City, Tenn.
