JU picked fourth in MAAC preseason poll
Before the JU men’s lacrosse team has even played a single game as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Dolphins were picked to finish fourth in the conference, according to the preseason coaches poll.

JU, which enters its first season in the MAAC after playing as an independent in its inaugural season, received 30 votes in a poll conducted by the league’s seven head coaches. Siena earned the top ranking with 43 points after going 12-5 overall and 8-0 in conference play in 2010.

Three Dolphins were picked for the 10-man preseason All-MAAC team. Sophomore middie Cameron Mann made the squad after posting 18 goals, 17 assists, 35 points and a team-leading 57 ground balls in his freshman season. Junior Jake Ziegler and sophomore Corey Lovrich were also selected at defense, comprising two-thirds of the total picks at the position.

Ziegler started all 13 games as sophomore in 2010, collecting 22 ground balls while causing 16 turnovers. The Webster, N.Y. native also added a goal and two assists. Lovrich started 11 games as a freshman, causing 10 turnovers while scooping up 23 ground balls.

Canisius’ Adam Jones was chosen as the 2011 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. Jones led all MAAC midfielders with 3.08 points per game and 1.92 goals per game, and registered at least one point in all 13 games.

The Dolphins will scrimmage Division II Limestone College on Saturday at 12 p.m. That game will be the last tune-up before JU takes on Georgetown in the inaugural Moe’s Southwest Grill Sunshine Classic on Feb. 20 at EverBank Field.
