Men’s tennis picks up first win of season
The JU men’s tennis team earned its first win of 2011 in impressive fashion, posting a 7-0 victory over Hampton University on Saturday afternoon at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.

The Dolphins did not lose a single set, going a combined 15-for-15 in set victories in improving to 1-2 on the season. First-singles player Fernando Bano Lopez led the strong showing, beating Gellert Varga, 6-1, 6-4. Lopez and fellow sophomore Pitt Von Oertzen also teamed to win their doubles match against Kenneth Green and Jung-Ho O.

Sophomore Jose Fantova cruised in the second-singles match, recording a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Green. Logan Shalmi followed that pattern in the third slot, logging his first singles win of the campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 in over Jung-Ho.

Freshman Larry Condez followed a singles win against UCF in his previous match with another stellar performance, out-lasting Alvin Fludd, 7-5, 6-3.

Junior Matthew Hansen also picked up his first win of 2011, defeating Edson Alves, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Pitt Von Oertzen rounded out the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 win.

In doubles play, Fantova and Condez teamed to beat Fludd and Alves while Bano Lopez and Von Oertzen capped the afternoon with an 8-4 win to give JU a win in all separate matches.

The Dolphins will try and sustain momentum on Sunday when it hosts Florida A&M at noon.
