Men’s golf tied for 13th after first day of the SunTrust Gator Invitational
The JU men’s golf team is tied for 13th after the first two round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational on the par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course.
The Dolphins opened with a 30-over par, 310, in the first round, but improved with a 21-over par, 301, in the second round to tie with Georgia Southern at 51-over par, 611.
Top-ranked Florida leads the 14-team event at three-over par, holding a six-shot lead over No.13 Auburn entering the final round. Florida’s Andres Echavarria leads the individual competition at one-under par, holding a one-shot lead over Mississippi’s Jonathan Randolph.
“We didn’t play as well as we liked today, but we kept fighting,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “This is another great event with a strong field and this is a great learning experience for our guys as we continue to build this spring.”
Junior Bobby Fredeking led the Dolphins individually, tying for 25th after 36 holes at six-over par. He opened with an even-par 70 to tie for eighth after the first round, but carded a six-over par 76 in the second round to slip to 25th.
Gavin Frost improved in the second round, carding a four-over par 74 after a 78 in the first round to tie for 48th at 12-over par.
Jamey Salmon had the low round for JU in the afternoon session, carding a three-over par 73, coupled with his 10-over par 80 in the first round has him in a tie for 58th at 13-over par.
Trey Douglas carded an eight-over par 78 in the second round to tie for 70th at 20-over par with an 82 in the first round. Dillon Batsel carded rounds of 82 and 80 to tie for 73rd at 22-over par.
The Dolphins will wrap up the event with the final round on Sunday at 8 a.m.
