Late run lifts FGCU past JU women, 64-59
The JU women’s basketball team put a scare into the Atlantic Sun Conference leaders from Florida Gulf Coast, but a late second half run lifted the Eagles to a 64-59 win at Alico Arena on Thursday night.

The Eagles (23-2, 16-2 A-Sun) got a game-high 21 points from Shannon Murphy as they clinched at least a share of the A-Sun title.

Taneskei Richardson had a double-double at halftime and finished the game with 21 points and 18 rebounds for JU (13-15, 8-11), while Ashanti Williams added 20 points off the bench, with 11 coming in the second half.

The big night was Richardson’s 13th double-double of the season and 14th of her career.

The Dolphins opened the second half trailing by seven and answered with a 14-4 run to take a 41-38 lead on a pair of Richardson free throws with 12:19 left in the second half.

The two teams traded the lead six times before FGCU answered with an 8-0 run, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Murphy to take a 56-50 lead with 5:14 left in the game.

JU battled back to cut the deficit to two, but FGCU scored the next five points – capping the spurt with a Kelsey Jacobson 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 62-55 lead with 1:40 left in the game, a lead they would not relinquish.

FGCU also got 15 points from Sarah Hansen, the only two Eagles in double figures.

A 13-0 run midway through the first half turned a 13-10 deficit into a 23-13 lead, thanks in large part by back-to-back 3-pointers by Janet Murphy – helping the Eagles take a 34-27 lead at halftime.

The Dolphins wrap up their regular season on Saturday at Stetson, with tipoff set for 1 p.m.
