Men’s golf in 15th after first round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational
Gavin Frost carded a two-over par 74 in the first round to lead the JU men’s golf team in the first round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club.

Frost’s round led the Dolphins to a 19-over par, 307, and 15th place in the 15-team event. No. 13 Auburn and #38 TCU are tied for the tournament lead at six-under par. LSU’s John Peterson leads the individual competition after a five-under par, 67.

“We had perfect conditions and the course was in great shape for scoring today,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “We made too many mistakes today to take advantage of those conditions.”

With the Dolphins starting on the 10th hole, Frost opened his round with a birdie at the 11th but a double bogey at the 17th sent him to the back nine at one-over par.

His final nine featured three birdies on Nos. 1, 6 and 8, but a double bogey at the second along with bogeys on Nos. 5 and 9 finished off another one-over par nine and gave him a tie for 41st.

Dillon Batsel is tied for 61st after a four-over par 76 in the first round. Batsel made the turn at even-par after a birdie at the 18th, but a triple bogey on the ninth, his final hole, finished his round on a sour note.

Jamey Salmon battled back from a rough opening nine to finish with a five-over par, 77, and a tie for 68th. After opening up five-over par through his first eight holes, Salmon rallied on the back nine with birdies on his final two holes to shoot just one-over par on the back nine.

Trey Douglas carded an eight-over par 80 to count towards the team score. Douglas had three bogeys, a pair of double bogeys and one birdie to make the turn at six-over par. He shot two-over par on the back nine, with a bogey on the ninth, his final hole, to finish in a tie for 81st.

Jimmy Murphy, earning his first tournament on the travel squad, carded a nine-over par, 81, to finish in 83rd. A string of five straight bogeys hurt him on the front nine, with the back nine highlighted by an eagle three on the par-5 eighth.

Taylor Szyndlar posted a three-over par, 75, playing as an individual and is tied for 49th. His scorecard featured two birdies and an eagle, on the par-5 11th.

The Dolphins will tee off in the second round on Monday at 8 a.m., playing with Mercer and UAB.
