Men’s tennis drops close match to Appalachian State
Doubles play proved to be the difference as the JU men’s tennis team lost, 4-3, to Appalachian State on Sunday morning at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.

JU fell to 2-6 in concluding a stretch of the season’s first eight matches at home. Appalachian State improved to 4-3.

Dolphins sophomore Jose Fantova continued his strong start in singles play, improving to 6-2 from the top spot after out-lasting Alex Markov in three sets, 1-6, 7-6, 7-6. Fellow sophomore Fernando Bano Lopez followed Fantova’s performance by winning the second singles matchup, 6-3, 6-4, over Alain Humblet.

Sophomore Logan Shalmi won JU’s only other singles match, posting a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Sebastien King from the fourth-singles slot.

The Mountaineers won three of the final four singles matches. In doubles play, Appalachian State won two of three for the additional team point to win over the overall match.

Phillip Kloc and Humblet won at first doubles for the Mountaineers while King and Markov teamed for the second win. Lopez and Lance Lvovsky won, 8-0, in third doubles but couldn’t alter the outcome of the match.

JU will play its first road match of the 2011 campaign when it travels to North Carolina to face Campbell on Friday at 2 p.m.
