Women’s tennis falls to Campbell in conference matchup
The JU women’s tennis team was boosted by strong singles play, but Campbell swept the doubles competition as the Dolphins lost, 4-3, in an Atlantic Sun matchup on Friday afternoon at Buies Creek, N.C.

The Dolphins overall record dropped to 8-3 and JU fell to 0-2 in ASun play. Campbell improved to 7-4.

Senior Eve Castaing gave a strong effort from the first singles spot, defeating Lisa Sutton, 6-1, 6-2. Castaing improved to 9-2 on the season in playing every match against the opponents’ top-ranked player.

Juniors Virginia Iwinski and Veronique Spencer also won in singles play to give JU a chance at winning its first conference match of the season. Iwinski improved to 6-4 on the season in the individual competition, defeating Campbell’s Dominek Wallaart in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Spencer rounded out singles play from the sixth position, registering a 6-4, 6-2 win over Natasha Afridi. Spencer is now 7-4 with all matches coming from that spot in the order.

Campbell earned the overall victory thanks to an earlier sweep of the doubles competition. Lisa Sutton and Wallaart won first doubles, 8-6 and Karolina Chernaya and Borislava Nikolova also won, 8-6. Heather Robinson and Anais Gomar capped the doubles portion with an 8-4 victory in the third and final doubles matchup.

JU will next be action on Saturday in another conference meeting at USC Upstate. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
