Women’s rowing gets good initial test at UCF
With its 2011 Spring Break Training about to kick off, the Dolphins got their first gauge for the spring as the JU women’s rowing team competed against UCF, Saturday morning on Lake Pickett.

JU had five boats competing (Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Junior Varsity 8, Novice 8, Novice 4) as the Dolphins will dissect their results against a Knight program that had competed in the NCAA’s and is regularly ranked in the Top 25.

“Overall, it was a good start to the season,” said JU head women’s coach Kris Muhl. “Both teams were shaking off some dust with us going into Spring Training and UCF just finishing. We have more speed to harness and things we still need to work on, but today was encouraging. Everyone gave it their all for the races, no question there. A few novices had their first race ever and all of them experienced their first sprint race.

“This will give us all strong incentive to continue to work hard going into Spring Training and throughout the season.”

The Varsity 8 with coxswain Jamie Goldstein, Danielle Fournier, Emily Close, Whitney Matthews, Jill Carmody, Abby Sierigk, Joanna Zachowski, Mary Mosier and Allison Sobiech finished with a time of 7:03.65 behind UCF (6:48.03).

The Novice 8 with coxswain Jordan Heylock, Mary Meyers, Kelsey Carl, Tiffany Malloy, Jordyn Clary, Marina Pelemis, Rebecca Clark, Maycee Dioneda and Abigail Bristlin clocked in at 7:47.40, behind UCF “A” (7:14.33) but ahead of UCF “B” (7:58.71).

The Novice 4 with coxswain Jordan Haylock, Maycee Dioneda, Abigail Bristlin, Tanita Simmons and Rebecca Clark finished with a time of 9:42.01 behind UCF’s (8:51.94).

The Varsity 4 made up of coxswain Jamie Goldstein, Danielle Fournier, Emily Close, Jill Carmody and Mary Mosier tallied a 7:42.55 behind UCF “A” (7:30.21) and UCF “B” (7:36.21) but ahead of UCF “C” (7:51.88).

The Junior Varsity 8 with coxswain Savannah Rice, Candace Barber, Morgan McTiernan, Tiffany Molloy, Jordyn Clary, Marina Pelemis, Kelsey Carl, Cassie MacLellan and Adrienne Santos finished with a 7:29.53 behind UCF’s 6:56.71.

The women’s squad will now head full force into their Spring Break Training before competing in the Governor’s Cup on March 19 in Fellsmere, Fla.
