Softball invades Clearwater again on Thursday
The JU softball team gets to enjoy some more beautiful central Florida weather as they travel to Clearwater, Fla. to play six games in four days starting on Thursday.

Prior to starting the USF The Game Tournament, the Dolphins (15-9) will play a single game on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against No. 22 Texas A&M

They begin the tournament on Friday against No. 21 Texas Tech at 5:30 p.m. before rounding out the day with Colorado State. On Saturday, JU plays Dartmouth at 12:30 p.m. and Winthrop at 5:30 p.m. They will conclude the tournament with Boston on Sunday at 9:30 p.m.

“This is a tough week for us,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “Starting the slate with two very good ranked teams will be a challenge. This week will definitely help us get ready for A-Sun play next weekend. I know our kids want this kind of test and I’m excited to see how we can handle it.”

The Dolphins return to the diamond after sweeping Delaware State, 2-0 & 12-3 (5), in their only action at home last week.

Junior Sarah Sigrest scattered four hits and struck out eight Hornet batters to get the shutout in the game one win. Sophomore Sarah Simon and freshman Karson Tuck each homered to pace the offensive attack in the night cap.

Sigrest was also dominant in the Dolphins last trip to Clearwater less than two weeks ago in the USF Under Armour Invitational. The Daphne, Ala. native racked up a 3-0 record with one save in four appearances, allowing just one run in 22.2 innings of work – including two complete game shutouts. For her efforts, she was named A-Sun “Pitcher of the Week.”

Offensively, freshman Meagan Balding helped the cause with a team-best six hits, including game-winners against Saint Joseph’s (3/4) and Villanova (3/5).

In the all-time series, the Dolphins are winless against Texas Teach (0-3), Colorado State (0-1) and Winthrop (0-5). They defeated Boston, 9-3, in Clearwater and swept Dartmouth in a doubleheader in 2007, while it will be the first meeting against the Aggies on Thursday.
