Sarah Sigrest earns A-Sun “Pitcher of the Week” accolades

Junior Sarah Sigrest may have to move the JU softball team’s home games to Clearwater, Fla. after another garnering more A-Sun “Pitcher of the Week” accolades.

Sigrest, who earns the honor for the second time in the last three weeks, posted a 2-1 mark with a 1.83 ERA, while fanning 16 batters in 23 innings during four appearances in Clearwater, Fla.

Her highlight of the week came in the first game by allowing an unearned run on one hit and five strikeouts in seven innings for the win against No. 22 Texas A&M (3/17). After fanning four against No. 21 Texas Tech, she struck out six and allowed one run on six hits to get the win against Dartmouth (3/19). Sigrest closed the weekend with four strikeouts in three innings vs. Boston on March 20.

“I’m happy that Sarah got this award again,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “She has been quite sharp over the last three weeks which will help us as we start A-Sun play. We’re looking forward to more good efforts out of her over the next two months.”

Sigrest received her first weekly honor of the year on March 7 after racking up a 3-0 record with one save in four appearances and allowing just one run in 22.2 innings of work at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.

The Daphne, Ala. native leads the staff with a 9-4 record and 1.89 ERA, while tallying 89 strikeouts in 102.1 innings of work. She is also holding opposing hitters to a .189 batting average against her.

Sigrest and the Dolphins begin their A-Sun schedule with a doubleheader against Mercer on Friday at the JU Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
