Women’s tennis rolls past Lipscomb in conference matchup
Despite playing its second road match in two days, the JU women’s tennis team recorded one of its best all-around conference performances of the season with a 6-1 win over Lipscomb in an Atlantic Sun matchup on Saturday.
The Dolphins won the top five singles matches and swept the doubles competition to earn the additional team point in winning its third straight. JU is 13-4 and 4-3 against the ASun. Lipscomb fell to 2-12 and 1-6.
Eve Castaing won her seventh in a row from the first singles spot, improving to 9-1 in her last 10 matches with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kara Jackson. The senior is 7-0 in conference play in singles.
Gabriela Bartos followed a similar path in second-singles action, cruising past Elizabeth Keevil, 6-2, 6-1. Bartos improved to 11-3 in the second spot, giving the Dolphins continuity all season at the top of the starting staff.
Freshman Flavia Nagayama stayed perfect in the third position, moving to 12-0 from that spot with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Alyssa Bellini. Fellow freshman Natalia Melibeu lost just three total games in pushing past Danielle Hansen, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Virginia Iwinski also registered a straight-sets win, rounding out JU’s singles victories by besting Julieanne McMeen, 6-1, 6-2.
JU swept the doubles competition to cap a two-match road trip through Tennessee with wins over Belmont and the Bisons.
The Dolphins will return to action on Friday when it hosts Florida Gulf Coast. Match time at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m.
