Baseball takes series over Belmont with 13-2 rout
In a near perfect game for the Dolphins, junior second baseman Jonathan Murphy went 5-for-6, sophomore first baseman Adam Brett Walker was a triple shy of cycle while senior Matthew Tomshaw hurled eight shutout innings to lead the JU baseball team to a 13-2 win over Belmont, Saturday afternoon at Shelby Park.
JU (17-10, 7-4) won its third A-Sun series by plating two runs in the first and third, five runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the seventh.
BU (13-15, 3-8) left 10 runners on base and could not find a way to slow the Dolphin bats, which finished with a game-high 17 hits.
“This was obviously a lot more comfortable to sit through than yesterday,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “Matthew was very sharp and to not give up any runs with the way the wind was blowing out was proof enough. Offensively, everything went right for us in every situation. Hopefully, we can carry some more runs over for tomorrow.”
Tomshaw (3-2) got the win after allowing no runs while scattering seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts in eight innings of work.
Nate Woods (2-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs (five earned) on 10 hits with two walks and a strikeout in 3.2 innings.
Along with Murphy, Walker went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and a game-high four RBI. Senior right fielder Esterlin Perozo went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run while junior shortstop Jimmy Howick also added multiple hits.
Woods led the Bruins offensively by going 3-for-3 with two doubles while Judah Akers added two hits.
The Dolphins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first when Walker hit a two-run homer to right field.
JU increased the margin to 4-0 in the third when Perozo led off the inning with a solo shot to right and sophomore center fielder Dan Gulbransen drove in a run with a grounder to second.
The Dolphins increased the lead to 9-0 in the fourth when Perozo hit an RBI double to left center, Murphy drove in a run with a grounder to third, Walker hit an RBI single to right, Howick hit an RBI single to right and senior catcher Alex Swenson drew a bases loaded walk.
JU made it 12-0 in the fifth when Murphy hit an RBI single to right, Gulbransen hit an RBI single up the middle and Walker drove in a run with a grounder to short.
The Dolphins added another run in the seventh when junior pinch hitter Matt Frank drove in a run with a grounder to short.
The Bruins spoiled the shutout in the ninth when Greg Brody hit a two-run homer to left with two outs.
The Dolphins and Bruins will conclude their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The contest can be followed through live stats or the Belmont Radio Broadcast by logging onto JUDolphins.com.
