Men’s tennis sees season end with loss to UNF
The JU men’s tennis team fell short in a must-win match against cross-town rival UNF, losing 4-3 to the Ospreys in the regular season finale on Sunday. The Dolphins needed a win to claim a spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament but instead ended the campaign 5-14 and 3-7 in ASun play.

JU closed the season with two straight losses at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex. The Dolphins could have qualified for the six-team conference tournament if it won, but UNF instead improved to 15-6 and 9-1 in clinching the league’s top seed.

Fernando Bano Lopez and Larry Condez recorded singles victories for the Dolphins. Lopez out-lasted Daniel Sotomarino, 7-5, 7-6 in second singles. The sophomore capped his season with an 11-6 record in singles competition, marking the highest total on the team.

Condez wrapped up his freshman season with positive momentum, registering a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win in fourth singles against Pedro Davisson. Condez finished 10-9 overall, making him just one of three Dolphins to finish the year with double-digit win totals in joining Lopez and Jose Fantova.

Yet UNF won the ASun’s regular season championship thanks to singles wins from Hleb Maslau, Moritz Buerchner and Beauregard Treyz. The Ospreys also won two out of three doubles matches to earn the additional team point.
