Women’s tennis caps regular season with loss to Georgia State
The JU women’s tennis team will be competing for a conference championship next week. But the Dolphins lost the final tune up before the tournament, dropping a 5-2 decision to Georgia State in a non-conference matchup on Sunday at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.
JU ended the regular season 15-6 overall and 6-4 against the league. More importantly, the Dolphins earned the sixth seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and will face third-seeded UNF in the first round on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Stetson University will host the tournament.
Senior Eve Castaing continued her torrid streak and sustained momentum entering the tournament. Castaing posted a 6-4, 6-3 win in first singles over Georgia State’s Abigail Tere-Apisah. The Dax, France native capped her regular season with a team-leading 19-2 singles record and will carry an 11-match winning streak into the UNF match.
Freshman Natalia Melibeu recorded JU’s only other win against the Panthers, registering a 6-2, 7-6 win over Maryna Kozachenko in the fourth singles spot.
JU will be making its first ASun Tournament appearance since advancing to the semifinal round in 2009. The Dolphins last won the championship in 2008 when it defeated ETSU.
