Men’s golf readies for Atlantic Sun Conference Championship
After facing a daunting schedule throughout the spring, the JU men’s golf team will be ready when it tees off in the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at Chateau Elan Golf Club.
The Dolphins have been battle-tested this spring by regularly facing top-50 competition, including matchups against Florida, Florida State, Alabama, Georgia and Stanford.
Topping it off is the foundation set at the end of the fall season when Jacksonville won its first tournament since 2007 by rallying to win the Hummingbird Intercollegiate over Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
“We have faced a very difficult schedule this spring to prepare us for this week’s event,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “The guys are in good spirits and are playing with a lot of confidence.”
Coming into the event, the Dolphins have a trio battling for the team’s lowest stroke average. Bobby Fredeking leads the way with a 74.81 average, but team MVP Gavin Frost is right behind at 74.85 and freshman Dillon Batsel is on their heels at 74.91.
Rounding out the lineup this week is Stephen Healy and Jamey Salmon. Salmon is coming off a solid finish at the River Landing Intercollegiate, tying for 27th at 3-over par. Healy will be playing in just his second event this spring after a hand injury kept him out for most of the season. He tied for 43rd at the River Landing at 7-over par, shooting rounds of 73 and 74 in the final two rounds.
The Dolphins will tee off first at 8 a.m., with fans being able to follow along on Golfstat.com.
