Track & field closes first day of NCAA East Preliminary Round
A trio of Dolphins inched closer to securing a berth in the NCAA National Championships as the JU track & field team wrapped up the first day of the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Thursday.
Seniors Unique Singleton and Danielle Davenport each earned a spot into the 400-meter quarterfinal on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Davenport ran a 54.96 for 17th place, while Singleton posted a time of 54.38 (9th) to earn her beth.
Sophomore Bienna Freeman tallied a time of 2:08.21 in the 800-meter to reach Friday’s quarterfinal at 6:30 p.m.
“I'm proud of Unique, Danielle and Bienna for battling tough conditions and finding a way to advance,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “I thought Bienna did a particularly good job. Tomorrow will provide a great challenge for everyone still competing.”
Sophomore Joane Pierre missed the 800-meter quarterfinals after running a time of 2:14.48 in the first round.
On Friday, senior Ronnisha Hall will start the day for the Dolphins in the shot put at 1:00 p.m., while junior Stacey Young is in the 100-meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m.
