Baseball selected to Gainesville Regional as No. 3 seed
After months of speculation and predictions, the JU baseball team can finally make plans for more games in June after receiving an at-large bid to the 2011 NCAA Baseball Tournament as the No. 3 seed at the Gainesville Regional.
The Dolphins will face No. 2 seed Miami (36-21) on Friday at Noon at McKethan Stadium, while No. 1 seed Florida (45-16) takes on No. 4 Manhattan (34-17) at 4 p.m. All games at the regional will be broadcast live on ESPNU with Kyle Peterson and Clay Matvick calling all of the action.
“First off, we are very happy to still be playing,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “We realize we are in a tough regional with teams that have reached the College World Series. We feel like we have a team that can compete and we are going to come out and play as hard as we can.”
JU (36-22) is making its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its 10th under head coach Terry Alexander, who is in his 21st season at the helm of the Dolphin program. JU is making its fourth NCAA postseason appearance in the last six years (2006, 2007, 2009) and received an at-large invitation to the tournament for the second time during that span (2006).
The Dolphins will be making their third postseason trip to Gainesville, Fla., including their last appearance in the postseason in 2009. JU will also join Belmont and Stetson as A-Sun teams in the tournament, the first time three schools have represented the conference since 2003.
JU, who finished second in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 19-11 record, was 47th in the RPI rankings according to Boyd’s World and was ranked in the top 10 nationally in several offensive categories. The Dolphins’ signature win was an 11-2 victory over No. 2 Florida at McKethan Stadium on May 17, while also going 9-7 against team ranked in the top 60 in RPI. JU also tallied seven A-Sun series wins during the year, including four consecutive on the road against ETSU, Belmont, Mercer and FGCU.
