Volleyball ends weekend with 3-0 win over Kennesaw State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman outside hitter Brittany Lehman finished with a match-high 10 kills to help lead the JU volleyball team to a win over Kennesaw State, 3-0 (30-11, 30-18, 30-27), Saturday evening in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the Swisher Gymnasium.

JU (9-9, 3-1) finished with a .337 (44-11-98) hitting percentage to run its season high winning streak to four matches. KSU (3-16, 1-2) managed only a .075 (32-24-106) hitting percentage in the contest.

"We finished off a strong conference weekend at home and now we have some momentum going," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "Our offense was clicking again tonight and our defense was also solid for us."

Lehman was the offensive catalyst for the Dolphin as she notched her 10th double digit kill effort of the season. Senior middle hitter Melissa Merchant finished with seven kills and a match-high .545 (7-1-11) hitting percentage in only two game. Junior outside hitter Sara Bendorf (6-0-12) and freshman middle blocker Abby Gruenbacher (4-0-8) also finished at .500 (4-0-8) from the floor.

Freshman setter Hannah Munneke recorded 34 assists and a match-high four aces while sophomore libero Michelle Walroth notched a match-high 15 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Nicki Kent also finished with a match-high four blocks.

Sabrita Gulley led the Owls with nine kills while also registering seven digs. Lindsey Plotner also chipped in with eight kills. Rachel Odom had a team-high .400 (5-1-10) hitting percentage and two blocks.

In game one, JU led from start to finish as the Dolphins opened with an 8-0 run. The Dolphins pushed the advantage to 17-5 on a kill by Merchant and then ended the game with a 6-0 run to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second frame, the Dolphins never trailed once again as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead. JU pushed the lead to 15-9 after an attack error by Plotner before jumping to a double-digit advantage (22-12) on an ace by Lehman. The Dolphins would go on to outscore the Owls, 8-6, for the remainder of the game.

In the final game, both teams battled through seven ties and four lead changes as the Owls took their first advantage of the contest, 4-3, on an attack error by the Dolphins. JU would use a 4-0 run to lead 11-6 after a kill by Kent but KSU would battled back to tie the contest, 16-16, after a kill by Jenny Black. After two ties, JU went on a 6-0 run to lead 24-18 after an ace by Munneke but the Owls would answer with an 8-0 run to lead 26-24 on a kill by Gulley. JU answered with a 6-1 run, sparked by two kills by Lehman, to end the match.
