Volleyball starts week with 3-0 win over Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Junior outside hitter Kesley Clark tallied a match-high nine kills to lead the JU volleyball team to a win over Bethune-Cookman, 3-0 (30-17, 30-16, 30-21), Thursday evening to start a three-match road trip at Moore Gymnasium.

JU (13-10) hit a match-high .328 (46-8-116) in the contest, including a match-high .430 (15-2-30) in game one, to erase a tough loss to Lipscomb on Oct. 13. Bethune-Cookman (5-10) hit .145 (29-13-110) from the floor and finished the contest with 11 receiving errors compared to only two by the Dolphins.

"We are off to a good start this week," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "We are fortunate to be playing Florida Gulf Coast in a non-conference match so we can get a feel for each other before they make their way back to our place. If we can keep our focus and work together, we will put ourselves in good position for a successful road trip."

Clark finished with a .533 (9-1-15) hitting percentage from the floor while senior middle blocker Melissa Merchant tallied a match-high .857 (6-0-7). Junior outside hitter Sara Bendorf racked up eight kills and 12 digs while freshman outside hitter Brittany Lehman added eight kills to round out the offense. Sophomore libero Michelle Walroth racked up a match-high 18 digs and three aces. Freshman setter Hannah Munneke dished out 38 assists to go with eight digs.

Danielle Goodrum led the Wildcats with eight kills and Kaiyanna Johnson added six kills and a team-high .462 (6-0-13) hitting percentage. Keisha Vicks and Alyse Guzman each chipped in with a team-high nine digs while Julie Gibson paced the offense with 24 assists.

In game one, JU outhit BC-U .430-.000 en route to a 30-16 win. In the second frame, the Dolphins hit .230 (15-4-47) compared to a team-high .210 (10-2-38) by the Wildcats as JU took a 2-0 lead on a 30-17 win. JU ended the match hitting .350 (16-2-39) compared to .190 (13-5-41) by BC-U for a 30-21 win.

The Dolphins continue the non-conference portion of the schedule with Florida Gulf Coast on Friday at 7 p.m. before returning to A-Sun play at Stetson on Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. The contest at FGCU will be available on ASun.TV on
