Volleyball falls to Florida Gulf Coast, 3-1, in non-conference action

FT. MEYERS, Fla. - Junior outside hitter Sara Bendorf tallied a double-double while senior middle blocker Melissa Merchant added 16 kills but the JU volleyball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 3-1 (23-30, 28-30, 30-28, 22-30), Thursday evening in a non-conference match.

JU (13-11) finished with a match-high 74 digs and nine blocks but finished the contest with match highs in service errors (11) and receiving errors (11).

FGCU (18-2) finished with a match-high .215 hitting percentage and had four players finish with double digit kills while four Eagles hit above .250.

"We didn't have a clean game but fortunately for us this match didn't count in the conference standings," said Kupferberg. "They are a good team and this match will help us prepare for them when they come to us later in the year. We still have a lot of work to do until then."

Bendorf, who ties for the team lead with nine double-doubles, tied the match-high with 16 kills while also finishing with 15 digs. Merchant also racked up a team-high .344 (16-5-32) hitting percentage and added four blocks.

Sophomore libero Michelle Walroth tallied a match-high 20 digs while senior defensive specialist Katie O'Brien tallied a career-high 12 digs and senior outside hitter Katie Hendrian added 11 digs to round out the Dolphin defense. Munneke paced the offense with 50 assists and a team-high three aces.

Ana Kokanovic led the Eagles with 15 kills while adding a match-high four aces. Roberta Santos tallied 12 kills, 27 assists, seven digs and four blocks while Brooke Youngquist chipped in with 10 kills and 18 digs. Patricia Silva rounded out the FGCU offense with 11 kills.

The Dolphins will end their three-match road trip with a conference showdown with Stetson on Saturday at 5 p.m.
