KUP'S KORNER: Game Week!
“The beginnings and endings of all human undertakings are untidy.”
Game Week! We’ve been training for the past nine months and now the time has come...Our first match of the 2010 season is only two days away and we are still a work in progress, but we are definitely ready to hit at someone else across the net.
Last weekend we played both our alumni match and Green & White match on Saturday. The alumni stepped up and played a tough match in the afternoon and allowed us to run through an actual game with everything from pre-game warm-up to the post game hand shake. In the evening we played four hard fought games in our Green & White match. The energy level was high with each player challenging each other to raise their level of play. What I learned from Saturday was that we have the potential to turn some heads...but potential won’t win us a single match this year.
The team has proven that they can play at an elite level in practice, but will that continue when we get punched in the mouth? Who will step up and who will sit down when the game is on the line? There is a lot to sort out over the next few weeks, but I’m just ready for the pre-game butterflies to be back in my stomach and the first National Anthem to be sung.
Thursday afternoon we leave for Clemson, S.C. to play Clemson, Albany and Tennessee Tech. Clemson and Albany are both championship level teams with plenty of NCAA tournament experience; while Tennessee Tech was voted to finish in the top half of their conference. Obviously we’ll have our hands full, but we’re just going to focus on making sure we get better with every touch of the ball.
