Women's rowing heading to SIRA championships
Championship season begins now for the JU women’s rowing team which will send a pair of boats to the Southeast Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships this weekend.

No fewer than 27 schools will join the Dolphins as SIRA has combined all women’s events in the regatta held at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Coxswain Jordan Heylock will pilot April Beck, Kelly Cleveland, Whitney Abshear and Samara Generals in the Women’s Varsity Four event. The Varsity Four preliminary race is set for 10:50 a.m. Saturday with the finals scheduled Sunday.

The Dolphins also will have an entry in the Women’s Varsity Eight with coxswain Savannah Rice leading the team of Emily Close, Cat Plesko, Whitney Mathews, Jordyn Clary, Rebecca Clark, Abby Sierigk, Maycee Dioneda and Mary Mosier.

“The women have been working hard,’’ coach Kris Muhl said. “Things have been coming together.’’

As has been the case much of the season, injuries have taken their toll on the team and that is continuing. Joanna Zachowski is out of the Varsity Eight boat this week and may be out for the season.

“There are going to be some fast schools at SIRA and we’re going to use it as preparation for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference races next weekend,’’ Muhl said. “We know what we need to do and we’re capable.’’
