JU women fifth at SIRA
The injury-depleted JU women’s rowing team came home with a pair of fifth place finishes at the Southeast Intercollegiate Rowing Association regatta during the weekend.

The Varsity 8 boat, with Savannah Rice at coxswain and Emily Close, Cat Plesko, Whitney Mathews, Jordyn Clary, Rebecca Clark, Abby Sierigk, Maycee Dioneda and Mary Mosier on board, was a mere three seconds behind William and Mary in the C Final on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Grand Valley won the event.

The women’s 4 was but eight-tenths of a second behind Alabama-Huntsville in the D Final. Coxswain Jordan Heylock had April Beck, Kelly Cleveland, Whitney Abshear and Samara Generals on board.

“This was good for the team overall,’’ coach Kris Muhl said. “We didn’t start particularly strong but each race, however, improved in some aspect.’’

Muhl said the SIRA may help in next weekend’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships in New Jersey.

“It bodes well for us,’’ he said. “No question having injuries has impacted us; the team has adapted to the situation to make it work. It is satisfying to see them coming more together as a team.’’
