The month of June is usually a quiet month for us as college basketball coaches. We're hosting youth camps, catching up on paperwork and planning for the next season. It won't be that way for me this summer as Coach Hewitt selected me to serve as an assistant on the USA U-19 national team.
First, I'm extremely honored and blessed to have this opportunity. Coach Hewitt has been a tremendous mentor and friend to me over the years and I truly appreciate the opportunity he's given me this summer.
Our first day was long, but GREAT.
I left Jacksonville about 6:30 a.m. and arrived in Colorado Springs around 11 - going straight into a meeting with Coach Hewitt and St. Mary's head coach Randy Bennett, who is also serving as an assistant coach for the team.
We had lunch with Sean Ford (a USA Basketball world champion), Roy Williams (UNC head coach and national champion), and Billy Donovan (UF head coach and national champion) along with me???
Yeah, that's exactly what I thought too. Some great legends in the basketball game and here I am eating lunch with them!
Our first practice was good. The guys got after it after some long flights. It was good to see DUUUUUU-VALLLLLLL getting some love with Pat Young (Florida) and James Bell (Villanova) getting some good reps with the squad.
Our dinner was BIG TIME. We ate at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort and it was magnificent.
Before I close, I've got to tell you that we got our team USA gear today too. Wow! It is some really GREAT stuff. It's truly a humbling experience to know that I'm helping build our young men to represent our country in an international competition.
