Jacksonville University senior quarterback Josh McGregor was named to the 20-player watch list for the 2011 Walter Payton Award Monday.

McGregor, who holds virtually all JU passing records, led the Dolphins to a 10-1 record last year and a Pioneer Football League championship as he threw for a school-record 3,049 yards and 32 touchdowns while throwing only seven interceptions. He is one of 11 quarterbacks on the watch list.

“It’s a great honor for me, but not only me but for the team, (head) coach (Kerwin) Bell and for everyone else who has followed the program the past few years,’’ McGregor said.

“He hasn’t been a one-year wonder, he hasn’t done it for two years, but he’s done it for three years,’’ Bell said. “As you look at his numbers they get better every year which means he works at his game. He’s a hard worker and the leader of our team and I think he’s got an opportunity to play at the next level. We expect a lot out of Josh and we expect his to have a fantastic senior year.’’

It is the second time in two years a JU player has been on the Payton Award watch list. Running back Rudell Small was on the list in 2010.

The award is sponsored by Fathead.com. The Payton Award will celebrate its 25th anniversary this season and be presented to the Football Championship Subdivision’s outstanding player at the national awards banquet Jan. 5 in Frisco, Texas.
