Volleyball picked to finish sixth in A-Sun preseason coaches’ poll
With preseason camp just a week away, the JU volleyball team was selected to finish sixth in the A-Sun preseason coaches’ poll released by the conference office.

Lipscomb, which has won the last two tournament titles, earned the top spot with 85 points (three first-place votes) and was selected as the preseason favorite to win the tournament again. Kennesaw State came in second with 79 points and two first-place votes, while Belmont FGCU and ETSU rounded out the top five. JU, Mercer, UNF, Stetson and USC Upstate made up the rest of the poll.

“As you can see from the dispersal of first place votes, the conference is an open race this year,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. “These results represent last season and while we were very disappointed in last year; we know we have a strong group of athletes and we’re looking forward to getting back to the top of the conference. Our coaches and players have been waiting to get back on the court for nine months and we’ll get our fresh start next week.”

The Dolphins return 11 players from the 2010 squad that tallied a 14-16 mark, just missing a spot into the A-Sun Tournament.

Leading the crop of returners is senior outside hitter Kathryn Kane who led the team in attacks (752) and finished second in kills (222) and digs (245) in 2010. Sophomore middle hitter Alyssa Robertson is also back after leading the team in blocks (88) and finishing fourth in kills (173) to earn A-Sun all-freshman honors.

JU will host its annual Alumni match on Aug. 20 to get ready for the season-opener against Montana State and Stephen F. Austin on Aug. 26 at the Georgia Southern Tournament in Statesboro, Ga.
