Countdown to The Citadel: 21 Days
Friday practice report: Full pads in the morning, uppers in the evening. The evening practice was cut short because of lightning in the area. Everyone’s getting excited about the scrimmage Saturday at Fleming Island High School, 1 p.m.

The Highlights: DB Andy Sainvil made a nice one-handed catch in individual drills … QB Josh McGregor is looking like a Walter Payton Award candidate. He hit emerging WR D’Andre Randle on a perfectly thrown over-the-inside shoulder pass for about 40 yards … PKs Bladen Gudz and Dallas Stubbs hit on plenty of attempts, icluding a few 42-yarders from Gudz, who weighs in at 147 pounds. “It’s a solid 147,’’ he said … DB Colby Walden had a nice interception and LB Blythe Weaver picked off an interception on a ball batted by LB Rolando Fines.

From The Players: WR Josh Philpart on his camp thus far: “Camp’s been going well. We’ve been running routes to get the timing right with the quarterbacks, the o-line looks good, (RB) J.J. (Laster) and (RB Keith) Dawson look good and McGregor and the quarterbacks look good. The game’s slowed down a lot for me. We’re not quite ready for the season right now, but we’re getting ready.’’

From The Coaches: Defensive backs coach Danny Verpaele on the status of his unit: “We’ve still got a long way to go in the secondary but compared to last year, we have a everyone returning and got a good group of kids who are really athletic. Our corners, Andre Addison, Colby Walden and Schoen Thomas are coming on and we’ve got about six safeties who can play pretty well. We’ve moved Darren Johnson to safety, he can run well. We’ve got three freshmen and Jean Bertrand has good feet and hips, I think he’s going to be a good player. He’s behind a lot of older guys but is getting better. Now we’re picking up the system and making sure we’re all on the same page. We have a long way to go but we’re going in the right direction.’’
