Women’s hoops announces 2011-12 schedule
The JU women’s basketball team’s quest back to the A-Sun championship game begins on Nov. 11 in Miami against FIU as the Dolphins release their 2011-12 schedule.
The Dolphins will get battle tested early as they play two 2011 NCAA Tournament participants, two ACC schools and their rival in the first eight contests.
“Our schedule will be tough,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “We are playing a lot of very good teams in our non-conference to help prepare us for our conference play.”
Following the contest against the Golden Panthers, the Dolphins open the home slate against Florida A&M on Nov. 14 before hosting Hampton on Nov. 19. The Dolphins earned a 49-42 victory last season against the Lady Pirates, who later earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
JU’s Thanksgiving week will be no cake walk as they travel to play NC State (Nov. 23) and Wake Forest (Nov. 25) in a three-day period.
After a trip to Savannah State (Nov.29), the Dolphins will briefly start the A-Sun schedule with a trip down the road to play cross-town rival UNF on Dec. 3. UNF earned both wins during the regular season in 2010-11, but the Dolphins grounded the Ospreys in the first round of the A-Sun Tournament.
The Dolphins head to Ohio to play defending MAC champion Bowling Green (Dec. 11) before hosting Jacksonville State in their first game of the season at the Veterans Memorial Arena on Dec. 15. JU will round out its non-conference slate with East Carolina (Dec. 18) and Georgia Southern (Dec. 21) on the road, while playing South Carolina State (Dec. 29) at Swisher Gymnasium.
JU opens 2012 with a busy slate of six games in the first 14 days of January. They start at home against Lipscomb (Jan. 2) and Belmont (Jan. 4) before heading south to play Stetson and FGCU starting Jan. 7. The Dolphins end the gantlet with USC Upstate (Jan. 12) and ETSU (Jan. 14) at Swisher Gymnasium and the Veterans Memorial Arena, respectively.
The reminder of January will end in road trips to Mercer (Jan. 19), Kennesaw State (Jan. 21), Lipscomb (Jan. 26) and Belmont (Jan. 28). They conclude the A-Sun road slate with ETSU (Feb. 9) and USC Upstate (Feb. 11).
The Dolphins round out their home slate against Stetson (Feb. 2), FGCU (Feb. 4), Kennesaw State (Feb. 16), Mercer (Feb. 18) and UNF (Feb. 25).
The A-Sun championship will once again take place in Macon, Ga. with Mercer as the host starting Feb. 29. JU kicks off the 2011-12 campaign with an exhibition contest against USC Aiken on Nov. 5 at Swisher Gymnasium.
