Volleyball downed by Georgia Southern, 3-0
Georgia Southern picked up its first win of the season by downing the JU volleyball team in three sets (18-25, 21-25, 13-25) on Saturday at the Spring Hill Suites Invitational.
The Eagles (1-2) hit .473 (52-9-91) for the contest while Bethany Sanford paced the offense with 14 kills and 10 digs. Parker Small (11) and Meredith Paskert (10) each finished with double-digit kills.
“We lost to a quality team,” JU head coach Shaun Kupferburg said. “I thought we played hard, but they made a few more plays than we did. Overall, we will look to try to even our record in the finale this evening.”
Senior Alliya Drzewiecki led the Dolphins (1-2) for the second straight match with eight kills. Senior Kathryn Kane added seven kills and sophomore Kendall Courtney tallied 24 assists.
In the first set, the Dolphins tied it at 5-5 early on a kill by Drzewiecki. A kill by Paskert helped build a 16-10 lead for the Eagles, while Kate Van Dyke’s kill pushed it later to a 19-14 advantage. JU had two attack errors and a kill by sophomore Kylie Jacob to cut the deficit to two, but Paskert closed out a 6-0 run with a kill to give Georgia Southern the set.
Trailing 21-13 in the second set, the Dolphins found a spark with a 5-1 stretch, capped on a service ace by Courtney to make 22-18 deficit. The Dolphins got it to three again, 24-21, on a kill by Drzewiecki, but another Paskert kill ended the set in favor of the Eagles.
In the third set, Kane cut an early deficit to 12-8 for JU with a kill before a 13-5 run by the Eagles ended the match.
