Men’s soccer falls to UCF, 2-1
Tyler Williams’ scored the opening goal for the JU men’s soccer team, but UCF rallied for two scoring strikes as the Dolphins fell, 2-1, to the Knights in the season opener on Sunday night at the Ashley Sports Complex.

JU (0-1) started strong against a UCF (1-0) squad ranked No.19 in the nation by Soccer America. The Dolphins, who lost to the Knights 5-0 in last year’s opener, took the early lead on a strong play by Williams with heavy traffic in front of the net, heading the ball in at 37:26.

UCF responded almost five minutes later when A.J. Nelson headed Nik Robson’s free kick past two JU defenders, allowing the Knights to tie the score off a set piece with just 2:46 remaining in the first half.

The Knights built an 8-2 shot advantage in the second half and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks after the break. But JU kept it tied until the 77th minute when McKauly Tulloch took Warren Creavalle’s feed and drew goalie Johnny Foley out to the net before firing a shot from the top-right side of the box that hooked to the inside the left post for the 2-1 edge.

“We played well against a very talented opponent but just couldn’t find a way to close it out,” JU head coach Mike Johnson said. “We’ll take the positives from this game and move forward.”

JU was paced by Williams, a senior forward who led all players with five shots. Fellow senior Darko Karamatic was the only other Dolphins player with a multi-shot game, firing two in total. Williams, who finished second on the team in 2010 with six goals, had four shot attempts in the second half.

UCF goalie Shawn Doyle finished with four saves. Foley posted one save.

JU will next be in action on Sunday when it hosts UMass. Kickoff at the Ashley Sports Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
