JU student-athletes start 2011-12 with annual "Welcome Back" Celebration
The 2011-12 JU athletic year is now full swing as more than 500 student-athletes attended the “Welcome Back” celebration event at John Sessions on Monday night.
Each student-athlete received a Jacksonville University Athletics t-shirt and a snack from McDonalds after going over NCAA mandatory regulations to signify the start of the 2011-12 season.
JU director of athletics Alan Verlander, JU president Kerry Romesburg , "Voice of the Dolphins" Terry Norvelle and the JU student-athlete services staff each spoke at the event.
“This is something I look forward to every year,” Verlander said. “It’s a chance for us to celebrate last year’s success as a group and set new goals for the upcoming season. Overall, I’m excited to get the year going.”
In 2010-11, the Dolphins won five conference championships and two rowing state championships. JU’s titles included the softball team winning its first Atlantic Sun Conference Championship in program history, while the track & field squad swept the indoor and outdoor conference titles for the sixth straight season.
The football team won its final nine games to lock up the program’s second PFL title in the last three seasons and the women’s lacrosse team dominated NLC play to secure the regular season championship in only their second year of existence. The men’s and women’s rowing squad took the state titles once again to round out the championships.
