Not much went right for the JU volleyball team in a 3-0 loss (16-25, 21-25, 15-25) to FIU at the Towne Place Suites/UCF Challenge on Friday afternoon.

The Dolphins (7-6) recorded a .057 hitting percentage (29-23-106), while the Golden Panthers (7-3) were a little more precise with 38 kills on 88 attempts to get the victory.

“We just didn’t hit well today,” JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg said. “We need to execute better if we want to beat a good team like FIU. I know we will shake this off and come out better tomorrow.”

Sabrina Gonzalez paced FIU with nine kills, while Andrea Lakovic, Marija Prsa and Jovana Bjelica each finished with eight. Gonzalez and Lakovic also added four blocks. The Dolphins were led by senior Alliya Drzewiecki who tallied with seven kills. Sophomore Kendall Courtney recorded 31 assists and matched senior Ashley August in digs with 11.

In the first set, Drzewiecki tied it early with a kill before a Lakovic kill wrapped a 11-3 run for a 13-5 lead. The Dolphins cut the deficit to 15-12 on consecutive aces by Courtney, but a 10-4 stretch gave the Golden Panthers the set.

In the second set, the Dolphins tied the score at 9-9 on a kill from Drzewiecki. Sophomore Niatha Cullen kept it close for JU with a kill to 16-14 deficit before FIU increased the lead to four (20-16) on a kill from Bjelica. JU cut the deficit to two points on three more occasions, but FIU took the set again on an attack error.

In the third set, the score stayed closed until FIU built a 15-11 lead on a JU attack error. After a JU timeout, the Golden Panthers used a 10-4 run, capped on a Lakovic kill, to secure the victory.

The Dolphins finish the tournament tomorrow against UTEP at 4 p.m.
