Dolphins go down to Stetson in overtime
The Jacksonville University men’s soccer team lost 4-3 in overtime to the Stetson University Hatters. The two teams came into the game tied for second place in the Atlantic Sun conference standings. With the loss, the Dolphins finish the regular season in third place.
The Dolphins (8-7-2, 5-2-1 A-Sun) had several leads throughout the second half, but could not keep the Hatters (9-5-3, 6-1-1 A-Sun) from tying it up and eventually winning in the extra period.
The scoreless tie was broken in the 24th minute when Hatter midfielder Jonathan Mendoza ran under a long ball and was able to get around Dolphin goal keeper Gavin Carlin and score the only goal of the first half.
The second half saw five goals scored, all coming within 17 minutes of each other.
The Dolphins started off the scoring barrage six minutes in when midfielder Jack McIver headed in a pass off Darko Karamatic’s free kick.
Minutes later, forward Tyler Williams was able to add a goal of his own off of a penalty kick putting the Dolphins up 2-1. The Hatters quickly tied the game when Kai Eckenrode perfectly placed a low, diagonal shot from just inside the box that found the back of the net.
JU was able to regain the lead when senior midfielder Stefan Durr lofted a free kick into the box that defender Tobias Hottner was able to direct past Stetson goal keeper Andreas Schnabl.
The final goal of the in regulation came in the 69th minute when Stetson was awarded a controversial penalty kick that Gonzalo de Mujica was able to convert.
Stetson got the game winning goal in the 95th minute when de Mujica fired a shot that was blocked but Eckenrode found the rebound and hammered home the winner.
JU held a 16 to 12 advantage when it came to shots taken and took five corner kicks compared to Stetson’s four.
The Dolphins will be the three seed in the upcoming A-Sun tournament and will take on the number six seed in the quarterfinals. They return to action next Friday to face the University of Nebraska-Omaha at 7:00 pm. This will be the final home game of the year and team’s seniors will be honored.
