Women’s hoops plays USC Aiken in exhibition game Saturday
The JU women’s basketball team will be in action for the first time on Saturday when they host USC Aiken for an exhibition game at 1 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.

This is the only exhibition game for JU as it gets ready for the Nov. 11 opener at Florida International. The Pacers will be a great test for the Dolphins, entering the game ranked No. 17 in the preseason USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.

“We are excited to be back on the court,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “Our team is looking forward to playing someone other than themselves. USC Aiken is a very, very good squad so we will need to be sharp from start to finish.”

JU returns 10 players from the 2010-11 squad that posted a school-record 5-1 start en route to double-digit wins for the sixth straight season (15). They reached the A-Sun title game for the third time in the last four seasons, but fell to the hot-shooting Stetson Hatters.

Seniors Crystal Bell and Jessica George are two of the top returners for the Dolphins.

As a junior, Bell led the team in steals with 55, which is tied for fifth highest single-season total all-time. She scored in double-digits 13 times, reaching the 20-point barrier in three contests. George tallied a career-best 17 points and 35 minutes in the A-Sun quarterfinals against UNF en route to earning all-tournament team honors.

Despite all of the players returning, the Dolphins were picked to finish sixth in the A-Sun coaches poll and seventh in the media poll.

The Pacers posted a school-record 27 wins last season, including 22 wins in their final 26 games. They reached the Peach Belt Conference Championship only to get defeated by eventual national champion Clayton State.

In exhibition action last season, the Dolphins downed Tampa, 70-41, at home, while the Pacers earned a 79-61 win over former conference foe and current A-Sun member Kennesaw State.
