Seniors Shine on Senior Night
The Jacksonville University men’s soccer team defeated the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks 3-1 on Friday night. All three of the JU goals were scored by seniors on a night that the team was honoring them for playing in their last home game as Dolphins. With the win, JU finishes the regular season with a record of 9-7-2.
The first half was uneventful as neither team was able to find any offense and was only able to muster two shots apiece. The period came to a close 0-0.
The scoring drought was broken in the 59th minute when senior Tyler Williams’ pass found the foot of fellow senior Christopher Helms who shot and scored.
Nebraska-Omaha was able to briefly tie the game up at 1-1 when Cody Thayer scored off of a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. JU was able to regain the lead only a minute later when senior Tyler Williams was once again involved on a scoring play, this time scoring the goal off of an assist from sophomore Nick Rodriguez.
The Dolphins added another goal five minutes later when senior Stefan Durr found the back of the net after another assist from Rodriguez.
Jacksonville used an 11-7 shot advantage in the second half to pressure the Mavericks and break the game open.
With the goal, Durr saw his team leading season point total climb to 15. The goal and assist for Williams leaves him with 12 points, while Rodriguez’s two assists give him 12 the season as well.
This game was a great opportunity for JU to get back on track heading into the Atlantic Sun conference tournament after losing two close matches in overtime. The team seized the opportunity and put together a nice win playing especially well in the second half.
The Dolphins will now travel to Johnson City, Tennessee to face East Tennessee State in the first round of the A-Sun Tournament. That game will take place on Wednesday, November 9th at 7:00 p.m.
