This Week in JU Athletics (Nov. 28- Dec. 4)
JU men’s basketball player Russell Powell was tabbed as the Community First Credit Union Athlete of the Week to kick off the latest edition of This Week in JU Athletics.

This Week in JU Athletics is a weekly feature to give fans the top five items of the week and a full list of all the athletic events so they can cheer the Dolphins on to victory.

Community First Credit Union Athlete of the Week – Russell Powell: Junior men’s basketball player Russell Powell was named the Community First Credit Union Athlete of the Week after winning the fan vote on the JU athletics facebook page. Powell scored 12 points in the win at Bethune-Cookman before adding a team-high 15 against No. 9 Florida a few days later.
Hoops gets ready to rumble - The Dolphins will start conference play on Saturday at cross-town rival North Florida in another installment on the SunTrust River City Rumble. The men’s team plays at noon on Comcast Sports Southeast (local channel 54), while the women are set to tip at 3 p.m. Last season, the men’s team won both regular season meetings before getting upset in the first round of the A-Sun Tourney. The women’s team broke a three-game losing streak with its win against UNF at the A-Sun Tournament.
Don’t look ahead - Sure, it will be fun to count down the games on Saturday against the cross-town rival, but both JU teams have early contests before they get there. The men play tonight at Marquette, while the women play Savannah St ate on Tuesday.
The 53 Campaign - The University will be hosting an event to celebrate Artis Gilmore getting into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday at the Veterans Memorial Arena called the “53 campaign.” The event will honor the A-Train’s long overdue induction into the hall, while also helping raise money for student scholarships. Those slated to attend are the legendary Julius Ewing (Dr. J), Rick Berry, George the Ice Man Gervin and Ed “Too Tall” Jones. You can learn more by logging onto www.ju.edu.

Next Home Games- Both basketball teams are on a rather long road stretch but will be back at home on Dec. 15 in the Veterans Memorial Arena. The women host former A-Sun foe Jacksonville State at 5 p.m. The men play against Winthrop at 7:30 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets by calling 904-256-7863 or logging onto JUDolphins.com.
